There are two methods used to extract coal from the abyss of the earth or the surface of the earth. The two methods are pretty self explanatory.

Coal mining employs surface and underground methods to extract coal. A number of alternative technologies are associated with each method.

Early coal extraction was small-scale, the coal lying either on the surface, or very close to it. Typical methods for extraction included drift mining and bell pits.
